FAQS: Buying Or Selling A Business: Your Questions Answered

How much will my initial consultation cost?

Your initial consultation is free. We’ll discuss your situation, how we can help, and likely costs — this usually takes around 20 minutes, after which we’ll send a formal fee estimate by email. If you’d prefer a more in-depth initial review before deciding whether to proceed, we also offer fixed-fee appointments from £250–£350 +VAT.

How much does it cost to use a solicitor to buy or sell a business?

It varies — costs depend on the size and complexity of the transaction, so we don’t quote a single fixed price for every deal. For more straightforward matters, qualifying fixed-fee options may be available, and we can discuss whether that applies to your transaction during your initial consultation.

How long does buying or selling a business usually take?

Most transactions take several weeks to a few months from initial offer to completion, depending on the complexity of the deal, due diligence findings, and how quickly information is provided by both sides.

I'm already using a broker or accountant — do I still need a solicitor?

Yes. A broker or accountant typically handles valuation, introductions and financial structuring, but the legal contract, warranties, indemnities and liability protection are a solicitor’s role. We regularly work alongside your existing broker or accountant rather than replacing them.

What's the difference between a share sale and an asset sale?

In a share sale, the buyer acquires the company itself, including its assets and liabilities. In an asset sale, the buyer purchases specific assets or parts of the business, leaving the existing company (and its liabilities) with the seller. Which is right for you depends on tax, risk and the buyer’s priorities — we’ll talk you through this on your free call.

Do you work with clients nationwide?

Yes – we work with business owners nationwide. Alongside our head office in Haywards Heath, we have offices across the UK, and the majority of our corporate and commercial work is with clients right across the country.
