At the last Pivotal Tribes event we were joined by Pete Dowds and Tom Brooks, the founders of Mopp (the home cleaning services portal), who managed to start the business and then exit it successfully within the space of just two years. Tom and Pete shared with the audience their experiences, knowledge and advice for others in a lively and amusing question and answer session that lasted about an hour and can be watched below.

Tom and Pete have been friends since University and gave up their City jobs to start Mopp after becoming frustrated with the process of finding and booking a cleaner online. Mopp was subsequently sold to Handy, the US equivalent, yet better funded, site where both Tom and Pete now work. They launched the business in April 2013 and with the help of VC funding grew rapidly before exiting to Handy. In essence the business provides an easy to use platform whereby customers just enter their postcode, pick a date and time and they send one of their fully vetted, insured and background-checked professional cleaners direct to a customer’s front door.

Amongst the topics discussed were how Pete and Tom built a minimum viable product, the mistakes they made along the way, what types of marketing and promotional activities worked the best, growing a team and technical challenges.
